Sie wuchs in Neuseeland auf, kehrte mit der Mutter nach Londond zurück als ihre Eltern sich scheiden ließen. Sie studierte Psychologie und Ökonomie und veröffentlichte mit 30 das erste Buch. "Die Teufelin" wurde 1989 mit Meryl Streep,in einer Hauptrolle verfilmt, doch das Buch geht wesentlich weiter als der Film.-
